Background practice.
Was on a good groove until I got to coloring Celestia herself (I shaded the background beforehand which I normally don't do), but couldn't work with the semi-transparent marker lines and the coloring until I did marker on the least... uh, hardness? The setting right above the size slider. Then it clicked.
Markers make me a better artist and a better man.
(I say, but I'm not really a man.)
